In case it was missed yesterday because of the 'flurry" of activity in the topic it was contained in, here it is again.

http://www.ask.com/bar?q=magill+university...91011081754.htm

What bothers me is that from about 2002-2006, the MNR did quite a bit of netting and study on the shrinking lake trout population in Shebandowan. During that time I was on the SLAC (Shebandowan Lake Advisory Committee). Not once at these these meetings when the MNR gave its updates did they suggest that smallmouth bass could be a contributing factor, yet one of their colleagues were involved in the Magill study. Was GP's influance a factor of this ommision?

It was decided by the MNR that there was no way (or no reason) to re-habilitate the remaining trout population in Shebandowan other than to keep the season closed. They blamed the demise on phosphate loading due to cottage developement. Thats a crock, might hold water for middle Sheban, but theres been minimal developement on upper Sheban in the last 30 yrs and its the headwaters, are the cleanest part. The MNR had taken DNA samples from Sheban trout and Greenwater trout to try to determine if the Sheban trout were their own or a Greenwater strain. I'm still waiting for the results ,they had the samples and said there wasn;t enough funding for the dna analysis.

In any event, the article in attached link says " these changes may threaten native fish populations, particularly lake trout".

So walleyes shouldn't be ignored.

I callange anyone here to provide any research or articles that would show that a strong smallmouth bass fisheries would benifit any other sport fisheries.

RP I have to agree with you. Although I'm not going to cite any articles, from talking with many 'seasoned' pickeral fisherman it seems that the general consensus is that when bass populations move in, they pose a serious threat to other species of fish.

I fish Lac a lot and have seen an incredible amount of bass in the lake the past 3 years. I usually keep them and cook them as I find they dont taste much different than pickeral, but last summer I found a few with parasites. Kind of gross..

I have only read the one article that the link was provided for so far.....................so i take it we conclude that the walleyes didn't eat the bass.............but the walleyes flourished 8 fold because they no longer had to compete with bass for food?

I would think all those, and then some, should be reviewed to get a decent opinion on the issue. Being at the university, it's easier to get access to these articles in pdf format than for Joe public; however you could go to the LU library and photocopy some of them in print. I can't just post pdf's due to copyright law, but if you send me a PM, I will send you the articles. Often they will also be available through authors' own websites provided they have received permission to do so. And of course, that is just the tip of the iceberg!
