idealteak 0 Report post Posted March 21, 2009 I just finished reading an article in Outdoor Canada about the Aurora Trout. The author caught a small trout only 10" long so he released it. I wanted to know more so I went on line and found a sight by brooktrout.ca. This site that stated if you catch an Aurora Trout you must keep it and that there was no catch & release for this fish. Who is correct?
Guest MNR Report post Posted April 2, 2009 MNR Answer: The details on specific lakes and the history related to Aurora Trout on the website www.brooktrout.ca/open-lakes-for-aurora-trout are essentially correct. However, there are two significant errors. 1. There isn’t a regulation that would prevent a licensed fisherman from catching and releasing Aurora Trout on any of the listed stocked lakes during the open season. A person with a Conservation Licence (possession limit = 0) can fish in a stocked lake during an open season and catch and release Aurora Trout as long as the fish is returned to the water immediately. Someone with a Sport Fising licence (possession limit = 1) could catch and keep one (1) and continue to fish practicing catch and release. 2. The website says that “live bait” is prohibited. It should say “live bait fish”. Aurora Trout are listed as “endangered” under the new Ontario Endangered Species Act. There is an exemption that allows for fishing for and possession of Aurora Trout when a person is following the Ontario Fishery Regulations.
