Oil Bath Bearings - tips?

Recommended Posts

mikejson

HI folks,

Just came inside from working on the trailer for next weekend :D

I got some oil bath bearings, and I'm looking for any tips to make the job easier next time, or to help make the rest of the work I have ahead of me easier.

Few questions:

1. Is ther any way to get ALL the old oil out without having to rip the hub apart?(ie taking off the o-ring and getting right in there) I seem to have about 5-10ml of oil left in there that won't drain out no matter how I turn the wheel.

2. should I threadlock the bolt that covers the drain hole?

3. I read a bunch of places, but has anyone ever used synthetic? everything I find only says SAE 50W oil.

4. Any tips tricks that you can think of that you've learned over the years with these oil bath bearings?

Thanks for all your input... and good luck next weekend!!
