I have never heard of them either. I don't know what this means for the splake stocking program. She had to bring one home to show me because she forgot her camera and didn't think I would believe her

I started fishing Stephens shortly after they introduced splake into the lake. In the early years I heard stories of the odd spec being caught. Reminents of the old brook trout stockings that use to occur. However, a couple years ago we made a trip there and the fish were really biting. One of the first fish my partner caught was a 21 incher. It was unusually dark and long - we thought it to be an old splake. Later in the day we caught another 15" fish with the same charteristics. Lake trout - long, lean, forked tail and grey in colour. I checked with a friend who works for the MNR, he says it is quite possible that lake trout yearlings got mixed in with the splake and due to the deep, cold habitat of the lake the lake trout were able to grow and survive. I have pictures somewhere, if I can find I will post.

I am sure someone else will catch a pickerel out of there soon.
