Guest Dan Report post Posted February 4, 2007 I happened to be a couple hundred kilometers north of Pickle Lake the other day, and despite the -40 temps, I managed to get a shot of this guy huddled in a snow bank. And here's his fat friend.

Guest Dan Report post Posted February 8, 2007 Thanks for the comments guys. For sure it would be purple meat on these guys. As much as I like eating Roughies, I despise eating Spruce Grouse. I think that they actually taste like spruce needles. Not that I've ever eaten spruce needles before, but you know what I mean. I quit shooting Spruce Grouse a few decades ago. Do you guys shoot them and enjoy eating them? Is it just me??
Cheech 2 Report post Posted February 8, 2007 I also prefer Ruffies over Spruce hens. With the Spruce grouse we got this year, we cut them up like chicken fingers, breaded, and fried them. Actually not too bad. Do not though, overcook them. No doubt more of a wild taste, something like liver. I find they have less of a wild taste early in the season, probably due to the wider variety of food available to them early on, before they get into the needles.
