fishingfinn 42 Report post Posted June 29, 2010 Does the MNR do any studies or take samples to record the mercury content in lakes/rivers in FMZ6? If so where could one find this information?
Guest MNR Report post Posted July 15, 2010 The Guide to Eating Ontario Sport Fish is published every other year by the Ministry of the Environment in co-operation with the Ministry of Natural Resources. Staff at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ministry of the Environment collect fish which are analyzed at the Ministry of the Environment laboratory in Toronto for a variety of substances, including mercury, PCBs, mirex, DDT and dioxins. Samples have been tested from 1860 locations in Ontario’s inland lakes and rivers and the Canadian waters of the Great Lakes. This new edition incorporates approximately 120,000 test results performed on about 12,000 samples, and also provides consumption advice for about 100 more locations than the last edition. The Sport Fish Contaminant Monitoring Program, which started in 1976, is the largest testing and advisory program of its kind in North America. Fish from a number of new lakes were collected by MNR during the broad scale fish monitoring program which occurred in FMZ 6 in 2008. Tissue samples from these fish were analyzed and results are now included in the Guide. Books have previously been available at Ontario Liquor Control Board Retail outlets. A pdf version of the most recent guide is available at www.ene.gov.on.ca/publications/590b14.pdf
