naden 136 Report post Posted March 6, 2011 Just wondering if Cowan Lake was a fish sanctuary and if it was, what the reason was. Also wondering if it is open for fishing now and if it is, is there any special regulations that apply.
Guest MNR Report post Posted March 10, 2011 Cowan Lake was stocked with 215 adult walleye from Lac Des Milles Lacs in Sept of 1993 using a helicopter. Cowan Lake was to be used as a donor lake for walleye for surrounding lakes using the natural reproduction of the initial introduced fish. The lake was surveyed in the fall of 2002 to determine if the introduced fish were reproducing and to get an estimate and structure of the population. The results of the survey indicated that the introduced fish did not take. As a result, the sanctuary status was removed from the lake. Today there are no special exceptions to the Zone 6 regulations for the lake. The 2002 survey indicated that the lake contained whitefish, northern pike, perch and white suckers.
