  1. Evening all! Im looking for some help, last year I tried fishing the nipigon river off shore for salmon, it was mid - late fall with no luck. Tackle used was - Rapala J13's. No bait used They were biting as other people had caught a few before I got there. I want to head up soon and try again, i know to stick with the j13's tigers, I'm hoping someone can give me some info on for these questions. -Best time to be out there? AM ? PM ? -Are they running/ best week to get out there ? -Bait ? Egg Sacks? Type? -Any other areas around Nipigon other then the Alexander Dam boat launch area? Thank you !

    Summer Salmon 2020

Its the 30th of May and water on the big lake has started to warm up. Watched a Bob Izumi episode where he was pulling tail dancers off planner boards in Lake Ontario and catching Chinooks.....his electronics showed a surface temp of 44F. Anyone started the chase for salmon up here om the north shore yet? I imagine everyone would love to get out and feel that first salmon of the yeat on the end of their line! Good Luck evwryone and let us know how you are doing! AB

    Salmon?

Was out yesterday afternoon after I launched at Portage Road. Water temps were from 59 degrees to 52.5 degrees at Silver Islet. Water colour was pretty good. Marked plenty of fish deep with a few up in the first 30 feet. Bait was scattered near the bottom. I trolled 20-30 feet down on the downriggers. Just three large lakers on moonshine spoons and a couple pop-offs. There were a few boats out there, I am guessing they were north in the bay. I went south to check out Silver Islet. No salmon.

    Salmon talk?

Come on guys... how's the fishing been? I have been having success with flashers and hoochies. The fishing has been much better than last year. 4 to 10 lbs in size. I also caught nice steelhead and a 4 lb coaster on the flasher/hoochie rig. Most fish were caught shallow (30' - 20' down), trolling at 3 mph. My 18 cm hot olive floating rap also caught me my largest salmon so far. Spoons not so much

    Crankbaits for Salmon on Superior

Just wanted check with other trollers about effective crankbaits for salmon. Years ago we trolled long lines with 18 cm floating Rapalas in either silver or gold. Lately, if the salmon were near the top, I would troll Live Target smelt imitations. A jointed Bomber in pearl white and pink was someone else's go-to crank. I know how flashy jointed raps do well in the Nipigon but I am not sure they work as well in the open water because their attraction is to p-ss off spawning salmon, not so much to imitate a food. Any other suggestions that are tried and true?

    Rant

Fall time salmon steelhead will be coming up soon, hopefully this the people that keep using Davis point down harstone road will stop leaving it looking a garbage dump. I know the experienced fisherman avoid this spot since there are way better areas to fish. Just hopefully more people will clean up after them selves . End of rant best of luck fishing to everyone!
